The Challenge
We’re asking more of police departments than ever—community policing, mental health calls, and more. And every call and every incident comes home with those police officers and staff. After several officer deaths, we knew we needed to change what we were doing.
And while LPD has provided mental health and wellness resources in the past, we needed a way to provide more services—and make them accessible to every department member.
The Solution
We didn’t need to reinvent the wheel. We needed to get resources to our department before there was a crisis. Funding from a COPS grant has helped us expand programs and provide an easy- to-access, confidential site for all department employees can get connected.

Our Team
In September 2020, LPD and our partners at TTU and LCU were notified we were awarded $73,407 through the COPS Office Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA). Clinicians, researchers and police officers working together has been the missing piece. Our officers provide the day-to-day reality of life on job and our academic partners provide the latest science and research.
Since this grant expired in September of 2022, the City of Lubbock and the Lubbock Police Department are working to provide continuous funding for this program to continue benefitting the employee and their families of the Lubbock Police Department.
